Woodshed Privacy Policy
Effective date: October 8, 2026
This policy describes how Woodshed, a music practice extension maintained by Tobias Sandler (GitHub: tsandler), handles data. It covers YouTube practice features and, in version 0.2.0 and later, imported audio and optional online lyrics searches.
Information processed on your device
Woodshed reads the selected YouTube video’s title, identifier, duration and playback state, and processes its audio to provide the practice features you choose. It also processes audio files you explicitly import. Audio separation, chord detection and local lyric recognition run on your device. Woodshed does not upload audio, imported files, separated stems or locally recognized lyrics to the developer or a transcription or separation service.
Local storage
Woodshed stores your song library, song identifiers and titles, practice settings, playback speed, transposition, count-in, loop boundaries, mixer settings and lyric timing corrections locally. It may also store imported audio files, processed audio, chord analyses and lyrics locally so you can reuse them. These records use Chrome local storage, browser localStorage and IndexedDB. Woodshed does not synchronize these records through a developer-operated server.
Optional lyrics searches
When you request a lyrics search, Woodshed sends the song title/artist query shown in the search field to LRCLIB (https://lrclib.net) over HTTPS. The query may initially contain the selected song’s title, and you can edit it before searching. LRCLIB receives normal network request information, including your IP address. Woodshed retrieves synchronized lyrics and displays matching recordings for you to choose. The selected lyrics are stored on your device. Audio and separated stems are never included in these requests. Local recognition is available as an alternative. LRCLIB operates independently, and its handling of requests is governed by its own practices.
YouTube and external links
Woodshed works on YouTube and may load song thumbnails from Google’s YouTube image servers (i.ytimg.com). Those requests reveal the requested image/video identifier and ordinary network information, such as your IP address, to Google. Opening YouTube or other external links is subject to the destination’s privacy practices. Google’s privacy policy is available at https://policies.google.com/privacy.
How information is used and shared
Woodshed uses information only to provide the music practice features described here. The extension contains no advertising or analytics tracking and does not sell user data. The developer does not operate a service that receives your audio, library or practice settings. External requests are limited to the user-facing services described above. Woodshed does not monitor browsing activity outside YouTube. Woodshed’s use and transfer of information complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements.
Retention and deletion
Local records remain until you remove them, clear the extension’s local data, uninstall the extension, or the browser removes stored data. Cached audio analyses may be automatically removed to manage storage. Use “Forget this song” in the library to remove the song’s saved settings and locally stored content; the extension may finish deleting cached content when its relevant page next opens. Uninstalling Woodshed removes its extension storage. Removing data in Woodshed does not remove records that an external provider may independently retain for requests already made.
Security and your choices
Online lyrics requests use HTTPS. Local storage is managed by your browser and is not separately encrypted by Woodshed. You can use practice features without online lyrics searches, choose local recognition, stop lyric processing, and remove saved songs. Exporting audio from an imported file creates a file on your device; Woodshed does not upload that export.
Changes and contact
This policy will be updated if Woodshed’s data handling changes. The effective date will identify the latest revision. For privacy questions or requests, contact the maintainer through the Woodshed repository: https://github.com/tsandler/woodshed-privacy/issues. GitHub issues are public: do not include private audio, sensitive personal information or confidential details.
About Woodshed Studio
You can process imported audio files or a YouTube video embedded in this website. For a new YouTube analysis, Chrome asks you to select this browser tab and allow its audio. Woodshed captures only audio samples. It does not read, record or store video frames, your desktop, other windows or other tabs. All capture tracks are stopped as soon as the requested audio has been obtained, before separation begins. Cancelling, leaving the song or closing the page also stops capture. Audio processing and cached playback run locally, without uploading audio or stems to a server.
The local connection only accepts pages at localhost:5174 and 127.0.0.1:5174. It lets this website use the extension’s library, settings, imported files, mixes, chords and lyrics. Nothing is sent to a developer’s server. The extension needs to stay installed and enabled to access its library. Without the extension, Studio uses a separate library stored in this browser and can still process audio.
If you already have songs saved on this website, they’re copied to the extension when you connect. The website keeps its copies until you clear its data. You can also use a separate browser library. In that case, songs from the extension won’t appear.
YouTube videos use the embedded YouTube player, which communicates with Google under its privacy practices. The demo uses original audio. Audio export is available for imported files.
